The RAD was divided into two main sections Reich Männer (RAD / M) for men and Reichsarbeitdienst der weiblichen Jugend (RAD / wj) for women.

beginning of the war, during the campaigns of Western Norway, hundreds of units of RAD were involved in providing front-line troops, food and ammunition, repair damaged roads and build airstrips.
