E’ interessante tuttavia constatare che mentre la prima delle due caratteristiche fondamentali di cui Dante dà erroneamente la privativa all’uomo, cioè la “virtute”, è oggetto di una sempre più vasta indagine scientifica negli animali, la seconda, che Dante indica come “conoscenza” (anzi lui impiega la parola fiorentina più arcaica, “canoscenza,” che le versioni attuali
E’ ben vero, come dice Dante, che negli esseri umani il desiderio di sapere è più potente che in qualunque altra specie, in ovvia corrispondenza con la crescente complessità di cui l’evoluzione ha dotato il loro cervello; questo desiderio può giungere anzi a quell’estrema, dolorosa e quasi ossessiva passione, che i filosofi hanno chiamato la “desperatio veri,” la bramosia sempre inappagata di conoscere il vero. Ma ciò non significa affatto che, almeno come spinta iniziale, questo sentimento non esista anche negli altri animali; io non dubito che si tratti di una questione di quantità, non di qualità.
E’ questo un bellissimo campo per una ricerca che non è stata ancora adeguatamente intrapresa. A me sembra molto probabile che all’origine di ogni desiderio di conoscenza ci sia la necessità, esistente in ogni essere animato, di trovare una spiegazione dell’ambiente fisico in cui si trova: la domanda “che cosa è tutto questo?” è certainly the first and most important that each stands coming into the world.
